Mother’s Day
It is nearly Mother’s Day and we have been busy in the kitchen showing our appreciation for one of the dearest people to us, our Mams. Going slightly overboard with the sugar and colouring (and crocheting hooks!) we couldn’t help but do a little tribute this week. What else would go down in your household as well as a yummy, lovingly made cake?
In the days where having a young girl as a maid was very popular, (not to mention other members of staff possibly at your disposal), it was tradition to generously give your servant the day off on the fourth Sunday of Lent to attend her ‘Mother’ Church, and because her place of work could be far away from home, it would also be an opportunity to visit family. This became known as going ‘a-mothering’ and it commonly involved providing a gift to their Mother’s as part of the celebrated and rare day off together.
Although Simnel Cake is more associated with Mothering Sunday historically, we decided that a nice and simple fruit cake decorated with sugar flowers would be better suited to our lovely Mams so please admire the one we made for Herron’s Bakery window if you are passing! Don’t worry we did manage to sample some before putting one on display (for quality control you understand), and will be making more for the Bakery shop on Sunday, with the same flowery decoration so don’t miss out!
The backdrop of Beamish Museum, especially when it is edging towards the spring season is a perfect Mother’s Day treat, so please pop in and say hello!
